The New York Road Runners Club (NYRR) - The NYC Marathon and a Lot More
posted July 27, 2008 - 11:52amThe New York Road Runners Club (NYRR) is best known as the organizer of the New York City Marathon, but that's just one of dozens of races and other events that the Club presents throughout the year.
In fact, the NYRR (which in 2008 is celebrating its 50th anniversary) is into more than running: it offers classes, clinics, and training on yoga, healthwalking, deep water running, and stretching, as well as running.
I've been a member of the NYRR for most of the last 30 years, its races and other events have been a key part of my fitness efforts.
Anyone of any age, ability, experience, and geographical location can join the New York Road Runners Club and receive discounted race entries and other benefits (including discounts at many local businesses). The NYRR has more than 40,000 members from all over the U.S.
Some of the NYRR's most well-known events besides the New York City Marathon are the NYC Half Marathon (held in 2008 on July 27th), the Women's Mini-Marathon, the New York Race for the Cure, New Year's Eve Midnight Run, the Halloween Run, and the Run for Central Park.
The NYRR also presents many races to benefit specific charities, including those supporting research for things like prostate cancer, breast cancer, and lung disease.
