Uncle MythMan says ...

For the longest time, I only heard the story of the book/play/movie secondarily—mostly 'guessing at it' through the soundtrack, supposing it ended with the Phantom screaming, "Go Now and Leave Meeeeeeeeeeeeee!," as he and Christine and ¿Raoul? (unsure of the name's spelling, all that really matters is that he was "the non-Phantom") die quickly & relatively-painlessly, mourned for a brief period in the instrumental epilogue.

But, it's not so clean-cut; the movie shows that–at the Phantom's utterance–Christine and the non-Phantom actually just leave as the Phantom just stays.

Christine and the non-Phantom go on to live happily; Christine for not much longer and the non-Phantom for an indefinite term with happy memories of the short time (eternity) he got to spend with Christine.

    I rated this movie 'four-out-of-five' because–although it is a timeless, ancient story with exceedingly-wonderful music–it doesn't show enough of the happiness of the main-characters' lives:
  • Christine, living luxuriously in the knowledge that she is blesséd by all the 'men' in her life who want her to live life 'to the hilt';
  • 'The non-Phantom,' living opulently in the knowledge that 'being good his whole life' paid-off in more than the comfort he was able to procure ... it also paid-off by setting him in a position of being able to provide shelter for Christine as she refined her abundance 'to the hilt';
  • The Phantom, living resignedly in the knowledge that the opera-house owners–while not fond of his appearance or his human desires–-love his work enough and/or -pity him enough to allow his lair to remain undemolished as he continues to suffer through existence 'to the hilt';
  • Everyone, with the knowledge that–no matter what they did or didn't or could or couldn't or would or wouldn't do–has a guaranteed ticket on the cosmic ride 'to the hilt.'
