The reality of diets.
posted May 11, 2008 - 3:53amThe biggest part of the people who cared about themselves tries to buckle down and lose all that extra fat for swimsuit season! This is the frame of mind that most people carry with them throughout a good portion of the year. Some people go to great lengths that are extremely harmful to their health to get that magazine figure.
This is the fact that when one embarks on a crash diet, the body first uses up carbohydrate stores in the liver and muscles. Due to this, the dieter may lose several pounds in water weight and could appear to be slightly thinner, but it leaves them dehydrated. After all the stored carbohydrates have been used, the proteins found in muscles are used as a main source of energy. This creates a feeling of fatigue and generates consistent headaches.
Crash dieting causes a lack of concentration and slows reaction time. Constant thoughts of food and body image overtake the dieter's mind and in severe cases, this type of dieting can trigger gout, kidney problems, and an increased risk of heart disease.
Crash dieting not only affects the mind and the body, but it also puts a dent in oral health as well. Since extreme dieters tend to have a lack in essential vitamins and nutrients, such as Vitamins D and B-12, and certain minerals and proteins, teeth and gums are at a potential risk. People who limit their food intake to fruits, which contain a high content of natural sugars, encourage decay and erosion to tooth enamel.
The main tips to healthy dieting include eating fresh fruit or raw vegetables after meals or as snacks, eat chicken, fish, beans, and pasta more often, choose lean cut meats and trim any excess fat, grill, bake, stew, or poach in place of frying, and drink low fat milk instead of regular milk.
With the huge variety of diets available today, one thing remains the same: regular exercise and consistent, solid meals are the roots to a healthy weight loss regime.
