The Rising Cost Of Food

The Rising Cost Of Food

I love food. I read about it... talk about it... write about it... and three or four times a day I like to eat some of it. So does my family. They seem to have acquired this habit of wanting to eat... several times a day.

I am trying to figure out how to tell them that they may have to change this habit somewhat. It seems that the traditional food we have eaten for many years because they are nutritious, tasty and not too expensive, may soon price themselves right off of our family's menu.

For example, pasta. For years we have eaten pasta several times a week.. It fills up the empty space in your middle. And my sons get empty often. It has not been expensive, and it is versatile. I can take small quantities of more expensive food items, make a sauce and serve it over pasta and fill everyone up.

Sadly, this may have to end. Everytime I go to the store, pasta has gotten more expensive.

Six weeks ago I was paying 86 cents a package for the brand of pasta my family likes... It takes two packages for a meal.

Then, a few weeks ago, the price went up to $1.28 a package. I was shocked. That is a huge jump in price. Ok, I refigured the budget.... a little less meat...fewer veggies... a little more sauce... we could manage...

Tonight I went to the store to buy pasta.... There were new price tags on the shelf.... $1.52 a package.

My mouth fell open... I just stood there in shock. I could not take my eyes off the price tag.

How .... Why.... How can this be?????

I turned and silently left the store.

I am grateful

As the author of this article, I am grateful for any comment, even negative ones, or minimal ones. I hear what you are saying Uncle Mythman, and it would be nice if all readers had the time and the inclination to write volumes about our articles... but reality is that many readers don't have that kind of time... or easy typing skills... I type quickly, and can write and type a long comment easily... if I have time... lots of folks don't and can't take the time. I appreciate someone leaving a nice info comment... It tells me that they came and that they read the article and appreciated what it said. I read a lot of article and I don't always leave a comment... some are just not worth the time. I sometimes leave a nice info comment myself and people who know me, know that I don't do that lightly or without thought. I hope it means something to them that I took the time to comment at all. I agree, that if their goal were to promote the article, a catchy subject line will attract readers... but the "nice info" comment tells me alot... and I appreciate my readers letting me know that they read my work and found it helpful in some way. I don't expect them to promote my articles for me.... So please, treat my readers more gently and don't discourage them from commenting, even if it is a minimal comment. Have a magical day, Angel

On Commenting for the Promotion of the Article Above

"Nice Info"? I was going to skip right over this article, as 'nice info' tells me nothing about 'what I could learn from this article.' When someone clicks on your comment, they are taken directly to it (thanks to 'Nick etc.' blesséd be thy names :-)) ). So a comment like 'nice info' might as well beneath an article singing "Happy Happy Joy Joy." You, the article's author and all Xombies want commenters to comment in such a way that leads to the article above: was it 'nice info' for helping humanity out of the problem of rising costs? What question did the 'rising costs'-article answer for you? Was it 'which foods to invest in'? What! (That might've sounded a little harsh, but I am the new definition of a "Dutch Uncle," a 'giver of guidance that-is good and fatherly if you take it and use it right but -is the ramble of a fool on the hill if you don't take it at all.') And So It Goes ...

I enjoy pasta sometimes too (about once a week, for me), but I've noticed the change mostly in the 2-liter drinks. Most of the time, they're around 99-cents; but lately they've been hovering around $1.07 ... not that either is 'breaking the bank,' but every little bit I can save can be used for things better than me. And the prices will flow downward and -upward as the Flying Spagetti demands ...Disagree? Join to Defend Your Honor!

I feel your pain on this

I feel your pain on this issue. I don't have kids to feed yet, so I can only imagine what that's like in the current economic climate. It's a joke. Click here for 30 days of free Blockbuster movies.

Food

Yes, food is going up. My brother, a merchandising manager for a grocery, said it is the cost of transportation. The grocery stores are not making any more of a profit margin, in fact they are making less money. The money is made on Twinkies, etc., fluff food not the staples. When food prices go up, people stay with the staples. I wrote an xomblurb on shopping at Dollar General Stores where prices on canned food are less. Also, in Arizona we have a long growing season, and we are close to California, and Mexico where fresh food is shipped in daily, so food prices are less. Try buying food grown locally at a Farmer's Market, or grow your own garden. Okay you won't grow your own wheat for the pasta, but you can grow your own tomatoes, and then can, or freeze themm in order to preserve them for this winter. So, Angel if there is price gouging going on, it's not the grocery store that is doing it. Food grown in Arizona is less if bought, and consumed here, so I do believe transportation costs are at fault.

Cost of Food

Too true Angel, and it's only going to get worse - particularly if the truckers stop running with escalated fuel costs.

Great Post,..... How true!!

+1 on your post. We housewives know only too well how the prices are going up and how we are having to cut on essential foods to keep up with the budget!
