The Totality of God and Our Partial Relationship with Him

The Totality of God and Our Partial Relationship with Him

God describes himself in many ways; with words, titles, pictures and relational terms.

He uses words like; holy, merciful, humble, righteous, meek, mighty, and gracious. He also uses word pictures to describe himself like; a lion, a lamb, a river, light, a pearl, wind, and the tree of life. He uses titles like God, savior, judge, king, teacher, prophet, and physician. He uses relational terms like father, brother, creator, shepherd, comforter, healer and husband.

When we teach children, we teach them the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic. This is what God is trying to show us. He has broken down the description of his nature into simple forms. Like a good teacher he has used many methods. He uses logical methods for our left brained brothers and sisters. He has used imagery for right brained people. He has used relational terms for people who understand through relationships (that would be you women. You know how us guys are, need I say anymore).

Now, with each one of us personally, how are we relating to these terms that God uses to describe himself? I don’t know about you, but I relate really well to his mercy, and so I tend to represent that nature of God in my limited way. But God is not just mercy; he is also the re-payer of wrongs done. That is a nonchalant way of saying he is the God of vengeance also.

What if I was trying to be your friend but only wanted to deal with one part of your personality, how would you feel? Only the part I wanted to deal with. What if I wanted to be your friend because you were a judge and all I really wanted from you was mercy for the crimes I am still committing? But relating to Him as the judge of all the earth is not all that he is. He is more and more and more. How am I relating to him as my Father? How am I relating to him as my shepherd?

Father, help me to relate to you in the totality of you. I know there is so much more to you. Even though you explain so many things to me; let me really and truly know you. Not just images of you; like old photos passed down from a dead family member or the photos of some vision a person had of you. Draw me to you, in closer relationship with the totality of you. It is so easy to think that you are just a being a billion miles away and always will be for all my life. But, I know you are not. In you I live, and move, and breathe. I know you are closer to me than I am. I know you are just waiting to talk with me, to reveal yourself to me in greater way. Please, Oh please, don’t let me see you and then take a photo of you and cease to have a relationship with you. I don’t want pictures of you. I want you. I want more of you. I know the corruption of my heart that wants to be prideful that I see glimpses of you. I don’t want a picture of your face. I want to run my fingers through your hair. I want to feel your breathe on my face. I don’t want to know about you. O’ God I want to always know you. I want to be in relationship with you. Even if I always remain ignorant of most of you I still want to just be with you. I want to be your friend. I want to walk with you and spend time with you. Please, please help me to have relationship with you. Getting to really know you and then help me to be a better friend to you. Wow. To be a better friend to you; I would truly like that. I am at your mercy. I cannot fly into heaven and search for you there, but you can come down and find me here. Please, I wait for you.

Your Friend Always,

Me
