Undoubtedly sports cars are a global event, but during the 1960’s US made history in the industry. They created conventional cars in early 60s and powerful cars in late decade, the 1960’s were indeed the marvelous period for American sports cars.
Detroit automakers have given many better-quality cars during the 1960s. Three are still with us as tremendous creation of the fruitful sports car making era in history.
In 1955 Ford Motor Company introduced its Thunderbird line. The car get immediate identification and solid response among sports car lovers, it was small and frequently available as a convertible.
Ford decided to revise and redesign its famous sports car opening after some years. Thunderbird possessed a total new body design attribute an extra pointed front end and the adding up of small fins above its mark able round taillights in 1961. In non-convertible models the roof was changed slightly and four headlights were standard.
Only the outside part of the Thunderbird was not changed. They introduced advance curved dash and moveable steering column.
They have changed its design in such a way that it becomes a better machine. With 390 c.i. V8 engine it was a complete machine. The new mechanical horse was able to generate almost 350 hp.
The 1961 Thunderbird guided the 1960s sports car progress in America. These forerunners were later called muscle cars. They maintained their usual sports car and started producing advance facilities in roadsters and other small cars.
Chevrolet introduced Corvette into the sports car market. Initially it was a small two-seater car with poor performance, the Corvette formed into a real competitor for the Thunderbird initially with the addition of a V8 engine and three speed manual transmissions.
Again in 1963 Chevrolet found a need of better design for Thunderbird. The T-Bird’s 1961 redesign was slightly out of fashioned and Chevy design team felt a need of outstanding design. They fulfilled that requirement.
The 1963 Corvette Stingray created great demand that increased sales to top level. There were sequence of mechanical up gradations and also changes in the body.
Automobile critics praised Corvette as an engineering surprise. For the first time, most car lovers who preferred European cars were forced to acknowledge the United State was manufacturing really the best sports cars. The Stingray achieved the best reputation in the history of American cars.
Chevrolet was not happy with producing only its Corvette line. They introduced Pontiac GTO and other best functioning large sports cars. They produced the classical muscle car: the 1965 Impala SS.
Initially entered as a first class car with great demand in the late 50s, by 1965 Impala had been altered into a performing miracle.
Almost a quarter of a million 1965 Impalas were sold, because of better speed and function of Chevrolet 396 c.i. big block engine.
The achievement of the 1965 Impala SS announced the starting of the muscle car age and is major example of nice American sports car progress in the 1960s.
These three cars are solid examples of the cars manufactured by US automakers during the1960s sports car passion. The best performing cars with combination of functions into faultless package were globally well accepted.
The 1960s may very well signify the crest of US innovation for sports cars. These three vehicles give a magnificent outline of this golden era in American sports car design.
