Just the basic martyr-for-general-love story: war, leading to mass-celibacy, leading to secret marriages, leading to imprisonment (i.e. the need to send cards), and ending in martyrdom.

The reason for the date (anniversary of some kind, I imagine ... having something to do with mating birds) is not as relevant as the reason for the holiday.
