The Ultimate Self-inflicted Injury
posted October 4, 2006 - 3:03amAh it is time for my second article. I have decided to commit myself to writing at least one article a day, for practice and to give something on my portfolio when I send the book I‘m writing to the publishers, so I shall do this one now. Today I shall write on the commonly discussed and somewhat disturbing topic, Suicide.
Instead of my last topic which was of a somewhat more light hearted approach on the topic I believe this one is hardly one for joking. Though it sickens me I believe it needs to be talked about as few people do and usually do only when they plan to commit suicide themselves or are forced too in school.
The statistics show that in 2001 alone 30,622 people committed suicide in the United States. And in 2002, 132,353 people were hospitalized due to attempted suicide. This is an incredible amount of people, about the amount of a medium sized city
I guess the numbers don’t really mean any thing, if we don’t know why they do it. It is apparently caused for many reasons depression being the most obvious, but also attention seeking, to cause pain upon others (by this I do not mean suicide bombers, but loved ones who kill themselves for revenge towards over loved ones).
Overall the reasons are still never enough to just throw it all away like that. It is a selfish act that will bring pain to others but the most obvious loss is for the person who commits it. No matter what your age, you always have more to live for, even if you were too find out that say, you were going to die in 6 months.
Not enough emphasis is placed in the topic in schools even though the government assures us that kids are getting ample education on the matter. Just like they are on topics like sex and drugs apparently (yet even now the teen pregnancy rate, and drug usage rates are higher what they could be).
I guess the only way to prevent it is to enforce it as a crime, though they do that for so many things and still they continue. In the end no matter how much education and how illegal it is, the decision will always be to the individual complicating it. And all I can say is, “Don’t do it, it’s not worth it!”
Ps. Please feel free to comment as I want to improve my writing skills and constructive criticism is helpful.
