the velvet underground are NOT under-rated!!!

just a quick notice here... i've got a "real-life" buddy on the phone right now telling me that the velvet underground are under-appreciated. NOW... there was a time when none of their recordings were in print, but that was many years ago... & i'm going to assume all of you have heard of the velvet underground.

if you haven't... then we're all just going to have to wait while you get caught up with the last 40 years of recorded music.

lou reed... nico... john cale... moe tucker... sterling morrison... & doug yule, who by 1973 was the only remaining original member.

but their first four studio records (1967-70) introduced kinky sex & frank drug use to major label music (on verve, no less). with a sound that pavement matched exactly to garner lo-fi glory 30 years later. the 1972 album "live at max's kansas city" documents lou reed's final show with the band... recorded on a fan's portable cassette recorder.

great band. but by now... everyone knows that... don't they?

dude...

i love the monkees. i even said so in your list. but they aren't underrated, frankly i think they have the correct position. their music is appreciated by a lot of people even while they are looked down upon to some extent. anyone who likes classic rock is bound to have heard and more likely than not thoroughly enjoyed the song "last train to clarksville" at the very least.

true enough...

which isn't to say that i haven't made a meal of popcorn a time or two... but your point is valid. & i've noticed a reduction in the tendency of people responding to my ongoing vanity projects to claim that the bands/movies they haven't experienced yet "suck". which is great. i figger if the internet exists for something other than cheap, crappy porn... then perhaps it exists so that people who think they know what they like & dislike to begin to understand WHY other people like the stuff they don't like & don't like the stuff they LOVE... so if my ongoing lists can get even one person to change their mind about one band/movie... well, at least it hasn't cost very much... & if i can get just one person to admit publicly that they've always secretly liked, even respected, the monkees... THAT will be a victory!!

or maybe not...

zomg wait...

...what are the velvet underground again? they're a band? i thought they were like a night club or something? hehe. it's sad when people don't take the time to study an artform. so many people just stick to whatever they're "genre" of music happens to be and listen to whatever is on the radio, never venturing past the same easy pop crap. i mean, seriously, popcorn tastes great, but there's no way i'd make a meal out of it.
