The Void Of Original Ideas In Hollywood

The Void Of Original Ideas In Hollywood

It seems to me that every film that comes out nowadays is either a sequel or a remake or based on an old television show/video game/comic book. Where have all of the original ideas gone?

Let's take a look back to 1987. The top grossing film of that year was Three Men and A Baby. Not exactly the finest piece of cinema but at least it was orginal. What about other movies that came out that year? Fatal Attraction, Lethal Weapon, The Untoucahbles, Predator, Full Metal Jacket, Dirty Dancing, Robocop, The Lost Boys, Throw Momma From The Train, Wall Street, Broadcast News, La Bamba, Moonstruck, The Last Emperor, Good Morning Vietnam, etc etc. Now I'm not going to pretend like there weren't any sequels that came out that year (Beverly Hills Cop II and Nightmare on Elm Street 3). There was even a movie based on an old television show (Dragnet).

Now let's take a look at 2005. The top grossing film of that year was Star War Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. As a Star Wars nut I love this movie but it is a sequel. And there were plenty of other sequels that came out last year. Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, Saw II, Cheaper by the Dozen 2, The Ring Two, Miss Congeniality 2, XXX: State of the Union, Spy Kids 4. Now how about the remakes. War of the Worlds, King Kong, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Longest Yard, Bad News Bears, The Fog, The Amityville Horror. Oh and how about those fanastic movies based on old televison shows/video games/comic books? The Dukes of Hazard, Bewitched, Fantastic Four, Doom, Aeon Flux.

The point of all of this is that I miss good original films. Where is my Back to the Future? Where is my Ghostbusters? These are great orginal, mainstream movies. Unfortunately Hollywood is not willing to take risks anymore so they keep churing out the same thing over and over again. The only way that we can stop this trend is to just not go to see these movies. So I ask all of you to please think twice before you go to see Transformers, Wicker Man or Lassie. It is hurting all of us.

You hit the nail on the head, Jeremy. The same thing's happened to Broadway. They came out with yet another revival of the musical play Annie in 2006, which if I recall, was a revival of another broadway version, which was based on the movie Annie, which was based on a previous broadway musical, which was based on the 70 year-old comic strip. How's that for originality? Flyswatter Xomba Moderator

"Three Men and a Baby" was a remake of the french Trois Hommes et un Couffin (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090206/) from 1985. As for your larger thesis, surely the way we fight the trend is to go see and support original, interesting films when they come out. We saw it work on TV -- when audiences supported "Lost" and "24" in great numbers, networks started funding more pilots that were intelligent, off-the-wall, and engaging.
