Plan 9 From Outer Space has terrible special effects! Image used by permission from http://www.freeimages.co.uk/

According to the The Arizona Republic Plan 9 From Outer Space is considered the worst movie ever made. It is 50 years old this year. The film features Dracula star Bela Lugosi in his final role. The film directed by Ed Wood, Jr features flying saucers suspended by visible strings, and cardboard tombsones that tipped over during filming. Andrea Beesley-Brown, Chandler Cinemas employee is quoted in the article as "It's so charming, so campy. The spcial effects, if you can call them that, were so primitive. He was trying, and I think there's somethikng admirable in that." Finished in 1958, 50 years ago, it had trouble finding a producer, and wasn't seen in theaters until 1959.

Lugosi actually died when only a few minutes of his character's role had been filmed. His role was finished by the chiropractor of the director's wife, who didn't look anything like Lugosi and was much taller than him.

The flying saucers used in the film were automobile hub caps.

The sheer campiness of the thing makes it great. Hard to believe that 2001 was made only 10 years later.

I grew up in that era of really horrible low budget sci-fi movies. Movies, like "ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES", "TARANTULA", "THEM" and "I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF" For you youngsters you may not know it but the star of TeenAge Werewolf was Michael Landon.

I actually have a dvd of "PLAN NINE FROM OUTER SPACE". It is a hoot to watch. There were so many errors in the film you just have to watch it to see them all.

Lugosi did die very early in the filiming. Much of the footage of Lugosi was stock footage that was sprinkled throughout the film after he died along with the appearances of a much taller "cloaked" Lugosi.

There is one scene in the cockpit of the airplane where you can see the shadow of the mke boom.

The dialog is wonderful for example in one scene, one of the actors tells his wife "I saw a flying suacer" Her response was "You mean the kind from up there" as she glances to the sky.

The opening scene is by Criswell a psychic known at the time for his inaccurate predictions. As you look at his eyes and listen to him it is obvious that he is reading everything he says. Such lines as "Future events, such as these, will effect you in the future" are true words of wisdom.

It truly is one of the worst sci-fi movies of all time, none the less, it is fun to watch, once every 10 years or so, and I still enjoy torturing my friends with it.

If you like this kind of really bad stuff - which I do - then you will get a kick out of how the police detective handles his gun. All I can say is you have to hope the pistol is not loaded otherwise he would have shot everybody including blowing his own nose off.

If you can get a copy of it then do so and enjoy.

It doesn't get any worse that Plan 9 From Outer Space.

It was a rather sad end for Bela Lugosi, though. Of course, I guess he'd been selling his name and reputation to the highest bidder for a number of years before that anyway.

Eros was played by a guy named Dudley Manlove. Everything about this movie is totally bizarre. The plot, the writing, the cast and the writer/director. From the mind of the crazed, transvestite, former Marine (Silver Star, Bronze Star and 2 Purple Hearts), Ed Wood..

Eros: You do not need guns.
Jeff Trent: Maybe we think we do.

My wife and I just rented the theatrical release of MST3K and I can't remember which cheesy SciFi movie they featured in it. Was it Plan 9 or something similarly cheesy?
