There Is Lots Of Small Print In General Motors Refund Offer (Including "Don't Die")
posted September 23, 2009 - 8:52pmGeneral Motors has recently been advertising a deal that will allow you to return a new car to the dealer for a refund if you don't like the car for ANY reason whatsoever. But if you are suckered into this sweet sounding deal, make sure that you read all of the small print before you part with your cash and drive away in a new GM car.
According to GM's Chairman and new TV pitchman Edward Whitacre Jr., “Bring it on back for a refund, no questions asked”. But is it really as easy as returning a shirt that is too small that your wife bought for you at Target? No, not really, as some of the fine print illustrates:
-
First, the program is only valid on cars purchased between September 14 and November 30.
-
A refund is ONLY available between day 31 and day 60 of ownership.
-
The car must be like new when returned with a maximum of $200 of damage AND, not surprisingly, the dealership gets to define what $200 in damage looks like.
-
“Your money back” does not mean ALL of your money. GM won't refund the title, registration and other fees, which can add up to several hundred dollars depending on your state.
-
Your refund does not include any accessories purchased as part of the car (like paint or rust protection, aftermarket equipment, etc.).
-
The car cannot have more than 4,000 miles on it.
-
You must be current on the payments.
-
Only one car per household can be returned.
-
Leased vehicles are not included in this deal.
-
The offer is not transferable, so if you die, no refund for your heirs.
-
Also, GM is quietly offering an incentive NOT to participate. If you waive the return offer when you make your purchase, you receive a $500 rebate toward the purchase of the vehicle.
It would seem to make more sense to shop around and find the best deal on a car that you really want, regardless of whether it is a GM or not...
