There's Hummus Among Us
posted May 11, 2008 - 1:29amWho knew that blending together garbanzo beans, garlic, olive oil, lemon and tahina would yield the most delicious dish I have ever had?
I knew something was up when there seemed to be a large number of Middle Eastern restaurants springing up all over the Pacific Northwest. Even in the best of economies, restaurants are a risky business. So what was driving this insane urge to invest everything to open a place that didn't have hamburgers on the menu?
It's hummus my friend. Served with warm pita bread and a cold drink on a hot summer day and you've got yourself a breakfast, lunch or dinner of champions.
The best part is that you're expected to eat hummus and pita with your hands. Rip off a bite-size piece of pita, scoop up the hummus with it and shove it all in your mouth. No need for decorum here as everyone around you is doing the same thing.
One of my favorite restaurants is Oasis, a locally-owned place run by a Lebanese family. Hummus is made by the vat and the place is always full.
If you have never had hummus, I would suggest trying it out at a restaurant first as they seem to have perfected the recipe. Once hooked on it, you can make it at home with a food processor or many stores carry powdered versions to which you just add water.
It's a healthy and tasty treat that anyone can enjoy. Go ahead, live a little...venture down the Silk Road to the exotic taste of hummus, your cardioligist will thank you!
