Thoughts on the Beijing Olympics?

Just flipping though the news one day I noticed that there was some sort of unrest going on in Tibet. I didn't quite understand what was going on, but as a quirky and curious person I sought to investigate these recent happenings. After doing some hefty research, I was shocked to learn of the human rights abuses in Tibet. China has sent soldiers and armored vehicles into a country that should have been granted its independence. Tibet has a world recognized leader, the Dalai Lama, who is an ambassador of peace and compassion. Tibet was also once an independent kingdom. In the 1950's Tibet was invaded by Communist China and to this day the people have been oppressed under Maoist rule. The Olympics are about compassion and friendship and seeing how China treats Tibetan people shows they have no mercy or care. We as citizens of free countries should have our voices heard. Protest the unfair treatment of the Tibetans and boycott the Beijing Olympics!

How are we doing any differently, though?

While we are not communistic here, we certainly have slid w-a-y down the ladder from a Constitutional republic. The United States has more citizens imprisoned per capita than anywhere else in the world and we are building more prisons and training more lawyers (of which we also have more per capita than anyone else) each year. Take a look at the situation in Iraq and almost certainly Iran shortly to see that our own government has no problem invading other countries under false pretext and installing puppet governments; how many innocent Iraqis have died since Bush declared "mission accomplished"? No, the Olympics are about apolitical sportsmanship and the only thing the United States will prove by any sort of boycott is how hypocritical we have become. I don't doubt that the Chinese under communist rule have oppressed their own people and that of neighboring countries, but people who live in glass houses and so on... DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?
