Three Ways to get Back to Bacon
posted August 17, 2009 - 11:38am ![]()
Remember the “Kevin Bacon Game?” Maybe you called it “Back to Bacon.” What I love about that game is the way it clearly demonstrates the far-reaching connections between people. No matter where you start, you can always get back to
Kevin Bacon.
By maintaining an active presence online, you participate in a similar game. People can find you from other starting points, through the back links and social connections you make. This is why you cannot just go online, start posting stuff and expect the traffic to roll in. You need to reach out to others and give if you wish to get.
How can you be sure people will always find their way back to you? Some of it is actually very easy and entertaining, but it takes time. Follow blogs in your niche, make comments when appropriate and share the most useful information you have. Then hang out on a few social networks and find people with interesting content with whom you can share and connect.
Think it’s too much work? Imagine if Kevin Bacon only starred in three movies, with one-hit-wonder co-stars and faded away. Finding your way back to Bacon would not be so easy. No connections, no way back to Bacon. Your website links, back links and social connections are the roles Kevin Bacon has played. They are many and of high quality.
When you link to others from your site, make sure you are linking to quality sources. When it comes to social connections, pay attention to who you follow on Twitter. Their tweets show up on your page. Do you want the “get rich quick” guys posting all over your page? Remember, it’s not just the number of followers but the quality of the content your followers share that makes your Twitter feed worth following.
Finally, be worth getting back to. Kevin Bacon excels at what he does. He survived the brat-pack years because of hard work and a strong drive to succeed. Had he faded into obscurity, we’d be playing Back to Barrymore instead. Use your will and determination to continue producing high-quality content that will create a fan base and keep others finding their way back to you.

Staying Power
You know, I absolutely agree. Except for Tremors [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100814/], what an incredibly good body of work!
I'm still trying to figure out how they got that cast to do that terrible screenplay...it is billed as a horror/comedy, but is just not funny... at all. Despite good performances, some scripts just cannot be resurrected no matter what you do!
You know was IS funny? The working title at one point was Land Shark. Maybe they should have called in Saturday Night Live cast members to help on that one...

Back to Judd Nelson
I was meditating on your comment regarding the staying power of Brat Packers, and Judd Nelson came to mind. I thought his performance as John Bender in the Breakfast Club was riveting, but he never seemed to live up to my expectations for him.
Another Brat Pack dissapointment was Academy Award-winning actor Timothy Hutton (does he qualify?) He disappeared from public view for years, only to return recently as a cop on some second-rate cable show.
These two examples go to show how remarkable Kevin Bacon's career has been.
