Tibetans - anyone hear them??
posted August 23, 2008 - 10:23amThe world seems to have forgotten about the Tibetans, OR perhaps they just don't choose to see them, hear them, listen to them perhaps! Here's a group of proud, nonviolent folks who've ruled themselves for hundreds of years and continued to be independent in the modern era until the Chinese decided to swoop down on them and occupy them. Ah! the Chinese - those pompous folks who call the Dalai Lama a terrorist, how laughable. Here's a man, a Nobel Peace Laureate, and the Chinese have the gall to call him a terrorist.
Well, I guess the Chinese arrogance can be attributed to their blinkered world vision. They consider themselves superior to almost every other country. For them the United States is a country devoid of "any history" - an aberration, having no civilizational past.
Whatever their prejudices though, can anything forgive them for their illegal occupation of Tibet? Here you have a country that has millions of its inhabitants living in exile in India. The Chinese have sought to systematically destroy Tibet's culture, its demographic composition by importing ethnic Han Chinese and settling them in Tibet. They have sought to build railroads into Tibet, flooding Tibet with unwanted Chinese settlers and causing untold environmental damage to Tibet. They seek to replicate their pollution-causing "development" in Tibet, too.
Its so sad, tragic really that the world doesn't seem to care. They want to trade with China - that's it. China is the biggest market of em all - so trade comes first. Human rights, well its nice for speeches, et all but thats about it. Make a few token remarks about human rights in Tibet and then forget it.
The developed countries that matter have all but lost their moral compass. They preach about democracy, but deal or rather love dealing with dictators. They love dealing with Communist China. They love to overlook the sufferings of the people in Darfur and in Tibet and Xinjiang - coz all that matters apparently is MONEY.
