Tips for Creating a Personal Assistant Resume
posted February 11, 2009 - 7:43pmWhen deciding how to write the perfect, concise and compelling resume for a Personal Assistant, a few things need to be considered. If the goal is to get a position in the field, you must make yourself stand out from the crowd. This can be done by focusing on your
versatile skills (administrative, computer, research and communication skills) while also stressing loyalty and commitment. After all, employers want to see that you can get their varied tasks done while getting along with their unique management style.
Be positive. Always be positive when listing your qualifications. For instance, if you’re leaving your current employer because they were too bossy and hard to get along with, you wouldn’t say this. Instead, you would say that you enjoyed working for your past employer immensely but are looking for new opportunities and career advancement opportunities.
Demonstrate your unique qualifications. Hiring a personal assistant can be a painstaking process, and the employer wants to make sure they won't have to do it again too soon. If you have never worked in the field before, don't worry.
You can still show that you are the most qualified person for the job, even if you lack direct experience. On your resume you need to identify work and life experience that shows ability to handle assigned tasks (word-processing, research, dictations, etc). You will also need to show your ability to work in a fast paced environment as well as do your best.
Be specific. Research the job description and specifically tailor your resume for the advertised position. For instance, if the ad requires a personal assistant with 5 years of experience then make sure you mention this fact. After all, you are competing with many other candidates and you must exemplify your qualifications and what makes you special.
Conduct research. Do your research ahead of time and familiarize yourself with the company or individual who is interviewing you. For instance, if you see that you have a fraternity or sorority or other group in common, be sure to add it under the interests section of your resume to stand out. Subtly placing a piece of information that will attract the reader to you as a person can make the difference between getting the interview or not.
Be concise. Lastly, make sure you say everything you need to say easily in one page. If it takes longer than a page to decide if they want to meet you, then it likely won’t happen at all! Good luck in your future as a personal assistant.
