Tips for Choosing the Best Color Granite Countertop
posted December 7, 2007 - 3:38pmGranite is one of the most durable, cleanable and currently most popular of kitchen counter tops. Lustrous granite provides a kitchen with fashion and function, but at a price. A valuable investment (and not necessarily returnable), homeowners need to pick wisely when deciding on granite color. Consider these tips for choosing the most appropriate granite countertop color.
Basics
Consider the size of your kitchen and basic color palette. A monochromatic look involves choosing granite that compliments the existing color palette. Need a punch of color? Choose granite that stands out in a neutral kitchen.
Granite pattern makes a difference as well. Refrain from picking a large pattern for a small kitchen. The countertop could overwhelm the space.
Lighting
The stone that draws your eye in the store may not be the best one for your kitchen. Ask the retailer for a small sample to take home. Since granite is comprised of light reflecting minerals, the stone’s look in the store will not necessarily be the look in one’s home.
Contrast
A portable sample of granite helps to gage the color against existing or new surfaces. Examine how the granite appears against the wall color, floor color and cabinet finish. The perfect beige in the store may appear too yellow against those maple cabinets. Institute a sample color comparison.
Planning to gut? Ask each merchant for a sample: cabinets, backsplash, paint swatches. Compare the granite against these other samples to make the best selection.
With proper care and light maintenance, a granite countertop lasts years. Think of that longevity when choosing a color. Abstain from a snap decision; make an investment.
