Tips For Coping With Bipolar
posted April 14, 2008 - 7:33amMy tips for living with bipolar. Bipolar is a devastating mental illness that can be treated with medication, psychotherapy and taking care of yourself.
Taking medications as prescribed. Having a set time to take meds can avoid forgetting to take them. It is important to remain on a set schedule. If they work, don't stop taking them.
Setting a time to go to bed and waking at the same time helps get into a set routine. Getting enough sleep helps stay on schedule and stablize moods. Being consistant is crucial to getting enough sleep.
Exercise is important, exercising at least 3-4 times a week. If you are not in the mood to do a work-out just a small walk around the block, or a spin on the treadmill. A bike ride, or a swim is also a good form of exercise.
Keeping a journal or mood chart to recognize when your moods are changing. What triggers you might have that set a cycle into motion. Journaling also gives you the opportunity to express feelings and emotions you might not be able to express with a therapist or friend and family.
Setting goals helps give you something to work towards. It can be as simple or difficult as long as it is realistic to achieve. Making yourself work towards stabilization is what your trying to do. A goal gives you hope and a reason to keep going when you are not at your best.
These are just a few small tips to gaining control of your mental illness. I have found that all of the above have helped me a great deal in finding a bit of stability.
