Tips to Reduce Computer Eye Strain
posted September 6, 2006 - 12:47amEnlarge Site Page Fonts
I love doing research online, and on any average day I spend at least ten hours on the Internet. I work online. One thing that drives me crazy at times is the tiny print some Sites have.
I have run across some beauifully designed sites with gorgeous images, eye catching colors, the works, but if the Font is too tiny or the page is overloaded with text, I usually move on to another Site.
The main purpose of having an online site, I would logically imagine is to present yourself to the public and have others read what you have to say. So why in the world would you make this a chore or an unpleasant experience for them?
Don't these site designers ever visit their sites after they design them?
I am middle aged and my eyes are not like they used to be but I refuse to go blind while surfing the Internet.
So I have ingeniously devised some ways to deal with this annoyance.
1. Shake my head, mutter some very unladylike things under my breath and head for another site.
2. If I like something about the site I usually try to locate a Contact Us button and click on it. Sometimes because of their tiny Font this is not easy. I proceed to write them an e-mail in either squint print or knock 'em over enlarged type, depending on my mood, praising the site but could they PLEASE enlarge the type on their site, thank you.
3. A tip to enlarge the Font on some Pages, I discovered by accident, is to hold down the Control key on your keyboard WHILE slowly rolling the wheel on the Mouse. You can select from a variety of different sizes too with this method. This also makes for a very cool parlour trick to amaze your friends.
4. A tip I use everyday because I like to be able to have most pages automatically load in large type is to readjust the screen resolution on my monitor. Simply
Right Click on your Desktop
select Properties
then click the Settings tab
Slide the Screen Resolution bar over to the Left
click Apply
click Yes
then click OK
If you occasionally get to a site where things are distorted simply temporarily readjust the Screen Resolution slide bar a bit more to the Right.
5. I more than likely Highlight the text I am attempting to read then copy and paste it onto a blank e-mail, adjust that Font to a readable size, and read each page of their site that way. Pretty clever huh?
6. Sometimes you run across a Site that has disabled the Right Click ability. There is a way to get around this. Highlight the chosen text and drag it to a blank e-mail as above. Pretty sneaky huh? Select No when closing out the e-mail.
7. Use the built in Magnifier on your Computer Windows program. This IS helpful but can be ANNOYING at the same time because of the navigation of it.
click Start
then Programs
then Accessories
then Accessibility
then Magnifier
You can also then select the Maghifier Settings to your liking.
So there ya go. Simple effective solutions to relieve eye strain while using your computer. Hope they help.
