To my friend, Les Porter
posted September 10, 2008 - 4:55amI may be too gullible to even answer your challenge. Other have challenged me and used my own words against me. But, despite being aware that, based on the tone and direction of your challenge, you already have a mind set regarding who I am and what I stand for, I will bite. So, here we go:
1. Innovation.
Science and technology have been responsible for half of the growth of the American economy since WWII. But several recent reports question America’s continued leadership in these vital areas. What policies will you support to ensure that America remains the world leader in innovation?
The answer Obama give is a merely generic one with no specifics other than "we must fund advanced science and technology studies". My opinion, is not a matter of funding or creating more opportunities. We have plenty of both. The problem elsewhere, and it is much more difficult than what he claims: basic elementary and high school education. How can you get anyone to enroll in any advanced study when we have an alarming number of high school graduates who can't even read their own graduation certificate? The lack of adequate education in the early stages is enormous. Excellence in elementary school is non existent. School and schooling has become a "necessary annoyance" to our children who would rather spend their time playing video games, watching TV, wasting hours a day on the internet (social sites, not in search for information and knowledge). Children are doing in the school the absolute minimum their are required to do just to get by with it.
What we need is not better colleges and more funds for advanced studies. What we need is a total reformation and restructuring of the basic elementary education. What we need is to create the means by which children understand and accept the importance of basic education and develop the love for knowledge and understanding.
2. Climate Change.
The Earth’s climate is changing and there is concern about the potentially adverse effects of these changes on life on the planet. What is your position on the following measures that have been proposed to address global climate change—a cap-and-trade system, a carbon tax, increased fuel-economy standards, or research? Are there other policies you would support?
Nothing Obama is proposing is new, and there are serious efforts to do exactly what he says he will do. No other country in the world is making more efforts to divert the energy needs of our nation from oil based to alternative sources. But the main problem, the insatiable hunger for money and power of the big oil companies, which use their financial and political influence to maintain the status quo, is no where in Obama's answer approached. And there is, in my opinion, a good reason why: he doesn't have the faintest idea of how to do it, not to mention, he doesn't have the political will to attack the problem and solve it.
On the other hand, the climatic change in the planet is following a cyclical pattern that has been observed throughout history: periods of global warming followed by periods of global cooling. It's not a surprise that the lunatic theories developed by another Democrat (Al Gore) is finding support in the party's base. After all, the Democrats are one big family.
3. Energy.
Many policymakers and scientists say energy security and sustainability are major problems facing the United States this century. What policies would you support to meet demand for energy while ensuring an economically and environmentally sustainable future?
Nothing new here other than throwing out numbers without any real meaning to them. What he proposes is already being done. And quite effectively I may say.
4. Education.
A comparison of 15-year-olds in 30 wealthy nations found that average science scores among U.S. students ranked 17th, while average U.S. math scores ranked 24th. What role do you think the federal government should play in preparing K-12 students for the science and technology driven 21st Century?
All I hear is "I will" and "I will", but no clear solution to the problem. Fixing the education system in our country is indeed necessary and a priority, but you can have the best education system in the world, it will do no good if you fail to approach, solve and protect the main problem: the family. A stable, strong family is a safe environment for the child to strive to excellence, while a dysfunctional family is the worst thing a child can endure. We have become a leader in world technology in the last century partially because we had stable, strong families and because the culture of obedience of children toward their parents was common. In our society today, parents are being considered a hindrance to the child's welfare and the government has intruded in the matter of the family to the point of intimidating parents to discipline and correct their children. The natural result is rebellious children and children with little, if any respect and/or fear toward authority. We will never get anywhere in education if we don't protect and defend the basic cell of society: the family. The best education system will do no good if you have no discipline and authority.
5. National Security.
Science and technology are at the core of national security like never before. What is your view of how science and technology can best be used to ensure national security and where should we put our focus?
Nothing new here. What he proposes to do is already being done. worthy of mentioning Obama's clear avoidance of identifying the threats, which, by the way, are not biological/chemical/nuclear weapons but the world wide terrorist groups, organizations, nations and individuals. Obama's solution is a passive one, while the threat is an active one. We must concentrate on intelligence, special opps and use of force wherever it is needed to destroy and minimize the chances that any of the bio/chem/nuclear agents can be introduced in our nation. And for that, we need a strong and wide presence of our military and intelligence in the world. Our national security depends mostly in diverting and dismantling any potential danger well before it reaches our shores. Once here, all the science and technology will be useless, unless, of course, Obama believes science and technology can immunize all American citizens against all possible biological and chemical agents, people will be made bullet, shrapnel and explosion proof, and all of our infrastructure can be built explosion proof.
There, my friend, you have five of my answers. Now, get to work.
