TODAY'S EDITORIAL: Media, Check Thyself

This sting turned out to be a tale. When Live India, a news channel, aired an undercover operation to expose the alleged role of a Delhi schoolteacher, Uma Khurana, in illicit sex trade, there was public outrage.

The teacher was roughed up by an incensed mob, dismissed from service by the Delhi government and arrested. It is the channel that stands exposed today. Police now say that they have enough evidence to prove that Khurana was framed by her ‘victim’, Rashmi Singh, who posed as a student forced into prostitution by her teacher. Singh is said to have acted on behalf of a businessman, Virender Arora, who wanted to settle scores with Khurana over a personal dispute. Both are now in police custody.
