Tofurkey - The delicious tofu alternative version of a turkey

Tofurkey is a healthy and delicious meatless alternative to the traditional turkey feast.

Made from either tofu or a wheat protein called seitan, tofurkey is not part turkey, part tofu, but rather, a high in protein food loaf that is perfect for the vegetarian-minded on Thanksgiving day.

Tofurkey is best cooked through roasting or baking. Many versions of tofurkey even included a grain-based stuffing, or a flavored bread stuffing.

Because of its increasing popularity, many food companies are jumping on the tofurkey bandwagon. Made by the Field Roast Grain Meat Company, Celebration Roast is one popular brand of the vegetarian dish. Another leading brand is Tofurky, produced by Turtle Island foods. Tofurky brand meals even offer vegetarian gravy to ensure your vegetarian friends enjoy a completely poultry-free meal.

Although not exactly the vegetarian equivilent of turkey, a tofurkey is a thoughtful and tasty addition to your Thanksgiving feast.

Publius, you've got a long way to go

So raw goat liver doesn't turn you on, huh? What kind of a wimpy meat eater are you, anyway? ;) Yes, I do shamelessly push veganism because it's simply the right thing to do on so many levels. And I will continue to try to change the prevailing human attitudes toward nonhuman animals and try to get more people to do the right thing until I kick the proverbial bucket. I don't think legislating plant-based living would be effective or even realistic; people need to make the decision to go veggie on their own or they'll resent it. So if you would rather follow the crowd and continue eating animal corpses, that is, of course, your right and your decision, just as I have the right not to. And, for your information, most hippies are not vegetarians/vegans. I wish they were. By the way---speaking of deliciousness, taste is not the smartest criterion for what you choose to shovel into your mouth. If it were, people would be chug-a-lugging antifreeze. I hear it's delicious too! But having said that, I will also say that if I didn't eat foods that tasted good, I wouldn't have been able to remain a vegan for the last nine years, give or take. Do I miss meat? Honestly, no. I buy human-grade meat quite often for my pets, and my husband still eats it occasionally, but it just doesn't tempt me anymore, and I was a hard-core addict (the goat liver proves it!).

Raw, warm goat liver? No

Raw, warm goat liver? No wonder you're a vegan. "...I continue to believe that what I'm doing with my diet is what everybody should do with theirs." That's the difference between us. You want everyone else to live like you do. I want to live as I please without hippies/vegetarians/vegans telling me what I can/cannot/should/should not eat - and getting the government involved. By the way...the turkey and ham I ate yesterday was delicious. Who is Publius? Join Xomba and get PAID to write - CLICK HERE!

thanks for reminding me, jonasbrothers

Just wanted to compliment you on your article about Tofurky (I got side-tracked by the soyphobe). My husband and I decided to eat out this Thanksgiving, but I'm going to look for Tofurky and all its trimmings as soon as I get back to shopping (after Black Friday, of course), and make it for dinner. Although it's gotten so popular that I can't always find it right away.

I used to be bloodthirsty too, publius

We have a lot in common. I used to be a particular fan of rare and raw meat, fish and eggs: like steak tartar, tere sega (Ethiopian raw beef and hot pepper), and sushi--and I had the tapeworms to prove it! I once ate the raw, warm liver from a freshly killed goat. And I used to mock vegetarians and vegans because I felt so defensive (and, deep down, guilty) about what I was eating. It's only when I had the guts to say, enough already, I'm cutting out animal products because eating them is unhealthy, unethical, uneconomical and unenvironmental, that I started to understand those so-called weirdos who allegedly ate nothing but tofu and sprouts every day and were painfully thin and ill (another myth about vegheads). I knew I was in for my share of dissing, and I've gotten plenty on Xomba and other places, and even though I'm not Obama-style cool by nature, I'm gradually growing a thick skin because I continue to believe that what I'm doing with my diet is what everybody should do with theirs. I'm only sorry it took me 50 years to see the light. So mock on. You know that old saw about sticks and stones--. Go vegan! Yum's the word! ;)

Mmmmmm...bloody

Mmmmmm...bloody animals...incinerated birds. You need to stop - you're making my mouth water. I'm drooling on my keyboard. Who is Publius? Join Xomba and get PAID to write - CLICK HERE!

I agree, Thanksgiving is awesome

if it's not smothered in the blood of animals that don't deserve to die for us. I celebrate it every year sans bloodbath. Try gravy and stuffing without the incinerated bird corpse some time, w/Torfurky, e.g. You might like it (although you'd never admit it, I know!). And, you or whoever is stuck preparing the poor dead turkey doesn't have to spend sixteen hours sweating over a hot oven. BTW, I hope you don't get too grouchy--there's only eight years of Obama to look forward to. It'll just fly by. Really. LOL!

YUMMY! Animal sacrifice is

YUMMY! Animal sacrifice is soooo tasty! Mmmmmmmmmmmm...I love the taste of cooked bird flesh! Especially when it's smothered in gravy and served with stuffing. Thanksgiving is awesome! Who is Publius? Join Xomba and get PAID to write - CLICK HERE!

Thanksgiving dinner is animal sacrifice wrapped in plastic

Au contraire, Publius, Tofurky is delicious, and getting better tasting and more popular every year, with hundreds of thousands sold. Tofurky stuffing is to die for (actually, there's no death involved, unlike the usual stuffing). But also, as you wisely suggest, there are so many delicious veggie alternatives to the usual bloodbath that has become Thanksgiving dinner, which I look upon as nothing more than an annual animal sacrifice (it's just that the actual sacrificing is done by others). The sky's the limit when you're eating vegan.

Tofurkey?? Sounds pretty

Tofurkey?? Sounds pretty disgusting...and pointless. Why not just cook some asparagus and eat sweet potatoes? Please don't spread hippie propaganda. Who is Publius? Join Xomba and get PAID to write - CLICK HERE!

I've had it

A few years back, my sister and brother-in-law (vegetarians) served one of these on Thanksgiving. It was not a big hit, I'm sorry to say. Maybe it was just a bad one, I dunno. Perhaps some people might enjoy it, but I still haven't gotten over the experience. ↑ Grab this Headline Animator
