Tom Cruise may force United Artists out of buisness
posted January 9, 2008 - 6:32pmHave you heard about the new Tom Cruise movie Valkyrie? If you haven't the movie about the failed 1944 assassination plot to kill Adolf Hitler, the only notable fact is that Tom Cruise wears an eye patch.
This movie has already cost United Artists $100 million with a number of big reshoots as well as a huge cgi filled battle scene that hasn’t been shot yet. Movie insiders project a final cost around $130 million. The scary part is most Cruise movies have not made much more than $100 at the box office, with the exception of the "Mission: Impossible" series. Cruise's and UA's last movie "Lions for Lambs" box office take was so bad it made the movie Gili look like a box office gold.
That’s why UA cut a deal with the Writers Guild over the weekend and get back to work. To get some other films out there to absorb some of Valkyrie's expected losses. If UA can’t get a hit or at least a few profitable movies it could go under because word is that UA's $500 million credit line from Merrill Lynch may be pulled if they don't start having a few successes.
