Top 10 Karaoke Songs
posted February 2, 2009 - 4:36pmThe best karaoke songs can vary depending on the group and setting, but in general there are several songs that really take stage as the best karaoke songs out there. The following is a list of ten of the best.
#1 Undisputed champion: "Don't Stop Believin" by Journey. Every time anyone in a Karaoke bar hears that opening instrumental followed by the famous first line, "She was just a small town girl, livin' in a lonely world," the cheering starts. It's like this song was absolutely made for karaoke. The others on this list you can mix and match as far as position goes, but love it or hate it, "Don't Stop Believin" is the king of all karaoke songs, and nothing's going to change that.
#2"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. Making a strong comeback with a great sing along of this song in the original "Wayne's World" movie, Bohemian Rhapsody is one of those karaoke songs that is great if you have a group of guys who can split the parts, like in the movie. The back and forth is what makes this song a great karaoke song, and even lets the guys off the hook if they have terrible voices, as long as they can nail the back and forth.
#3 "Goodbye Earl" by the Dixie Chicks. This is the group of girls' karaoke answer to the guys with Bohemian Rhapsody. This song only works if it's a group of girls, preferably already having a "little too much" fun. This is an odd and entertaining song, and can really make for a fun karaoke mood.
#4 "Because I Got High" by Afroman. Maybe you have a reputation for liking the ganja, maybe you're a completely clean gut guy (or gal) who finds shock value funny, or maybe you have a terrible singing voice and lost a bet. If any of these reasons apply, this is a great somewhat funky song that probably works better for karaoke than it does anything else, actually.
#5 "Here I Go Again" by Whitesnake. Perhaps the king of all eighties songs, this is one of those classic eighties songs that many people who didn't even like eighties music still like. You need some vocals to be able to pull it off, but if you can't hit the high range of notes you can always make this song a little more bluesy and get away with it. Plays great with the 80's crowd, obviously.
#6 Bon Jovi: either "Dead or Alive" or "Living on a Prayer." Both of these songs have good beats, classic lyrics, and are commonly known by millions. Both make great karaoke songs, and are generally well liked enough that you can get away with having a not 100% perfect voice – always a plus for those of us who are somewhat vocally challenged.
#7 "Hey Joe" by Jimi Hendrix. You need kick butt singing ability to pull this one off, but if you can pull the bluesy Hendrix-like vocals off, this is great one that gets attention for being unique, edgy, and unconventional. It's also just a great song.
#8 Tom Petty "Mary Jane's Last Dance" or "You Don't Know How it Feels." Old school Petty fans will love hearing "Mary Jane's Last Dance" again, and every Petty fan, old and young, love "You Don't Know How it Feels." For the right crowd, either one of these songs is a grand slam homerun on karaoke night.
#9 "Tubthumper" by Chumbawumba. It's a one hit wonder, it was great because it was terrible, and a group of stinking' drunk guys can still sing it without forgetting the lyrics. Besides, bartenders will kill you if you play anything by Jimmy Buffett.
#10 "Celebrate" by Cool & the Gang. This one is a little corny and is probably best for stuff like high school graduations, or your candidate winning the Presidential election, but it is a karaoke/celebration song that deserves its place on this list, even if it is at the bottom.
