Top 10 Songs of the British Invasion

The British Invasion can best be defined as the sudden burst of interest in British bands in America immediately following the appearance of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Since The Beatles started this movement, they will start this off with "I Want To Hold Your Hand".

If The Beatles are the first band mentioned when talking about the British Invasion, the Rolling Stones are inevitably the second. Here is my favorite Rolling Stones song "Paint it Black".

When Chuck Berry got out of jail in the 60s and went on a tour of England, he chose The Animals. With lead singer Eric Burdon, The Animals had a bluesy sound that made them stand out from the rest of their contemporaries. Here is their version of "House of the Rising Sun".

A band with a rougher edge the rest of the music coming out of England during the British Invasion was The Who. Drummer Keith Moon and guitarist Pete Townsend regularly destroyed their musical equipment on stage which has become a rock cliche by today's standards. Here is "My Generation".

The Kinks were British through and through. Lead singer and guitarist Ray Davies became the epitome of Mod fashion. Here is their break through single "You Really Got Me".

A personal favorite, and underdog, of the British Invasion, was The Zombies. Not only did they record one of the greatest albums of the decade, Odyssey and Oracle, they also released one of the most infectious singles, "She's Not There".

Before joining Crosby, Stills and Nash in the 70s, Graham Nash was the lead singer of the excellent group The Hollies. They recorded one of the best love songs of this period, "Bus Stop".

The Dave Clark Five obtained hit status in the US with the songs "Bits and Pieces" and "Glad All Over" and were honored by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2008. Here is "Glad All Over".

The Searchers, or the other band from Liverpool, followed in The Beatles footsteps in obtaining a hit song in the States. Here is that song, "Needles and Pins".

Finally, I give you The Creation. A band that was never as well known in America as other British Bands during the mid 60s but played with an intensity that could only be matched by The Who. Here is "Making Time".
