Towards Carfree Cities: 8th Annual International Conference-Portland OR tests idea
posted June 17, 2008 - 7:54amThis year, for the first time in North America, the World Carfree Network opens its conference in Portland, Oregon. Hundreds of planners from all over the world are meeting to discuss how to create cities without cars.
The big experiment test, which is to close down six miles of Portland streets in a loop surrounding 150 blocks of dense populated residential housing and businesses.
The experiment begins at 8am on Sunday June 22, and will last until 2pm. This experiment is modeled after a much bigger scale weekly experiment conducted in Bogata, Columbia, where almost 70 miles of streets are shut down.
Another event has already occurred this week, with the digging up of a paved parking lot, which will be turned into an area of green for people...
