Track Star Marion Jones Goes to Prison

The ex-track star Marion Jones has began her six month prison sentence on Friday. She was convicted of lying to investigators about using performance-enhancing drugs and her part in a check-fraud scam. She turned herself in before noon on Friday at the Federal Medical Center Carswell, which is on the Naval Air Station. She had until Tuesday to turn herself in. The prison that she is in specializes in medical and mental health services, but it also has inmates who don’t need any care.

Cheating cheats more than the competitors

If you look at the very reason the Olympics are there--to bring countries together in friendship and competition, even if the governments are not getting along politically--then a competitor feeling the need to cheat to win undermines the whole purpose. But, that's part of the problem, at least here in the U.S. Our history is so rich with examples of glowing stories about winners and victories that finishing below first place and epitomizing sportsmanship in defeat is something to be avoided, as if not winning a gold medal or the blue ribbon is something that is shameful. The fact that certain athletes feel the need to ingest or inject known harmful substances into his or her body just to get a "competitive edge" tells more about the expectations placed on athletes by our culture than how many records may be broken or medals won. ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING

Marion Jones could have been great without steroids...

While I don't know if Marion Jones could have been the winner she was without performance enhancing drugs I think that she would have been a contender. It's too bad she wanted to be famous at all cost. Look at what it cost her. The other athletes, competing in the same events, stated that it was a bittersweet victory for them since the race could not be repeated. Athletes who use steroids in their training have robbed other, honest, athletes of their true victories. Join Xomba

Yes and No

While she certainly didn't help her extended athlete family by taking performance enhancing substances, she has done more to heal that image than, say, major league baseball players. She apologized and gave back the medals she won at the Olympics. Now she is doing the time for her crime. Do you believe Barry Bonds will tell the MLB commissioner and future HOF committee to rescind his place in the record books and remove him from HOF consideration if it became publicly known that he took steroids, considering he has stonewalled every investigation into his use and continues to deny using them? While I don't condone the taking of those substances or lying about it afterwards, I have more respect for athletes who "fess up" and take their punishment than for those who deny until they are caught then try and shift the blame for their own mistakes. ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING

giving athletes a bad

giving athletes a bad nameee!
