posted October 25, 2009 - 8:44amAs a young child who lives in an abusive home, the only means of escape many times is within our own minds. To flee is a God-given ability, whether it is in the physical realm or the mental and emotional realm. Dissociation is a form of mental and emotional fleeing from harmful situations that are overwhelming. It is a survival technique that seems to come quite easily to young children. It many cases, it is life-saving and should never be looked upon as sinful. Dissociation has many degrees and not everyone who dissociates has multiple personality disorder or dissociative identity disorder, as it is called today. However, many of us do or did and it is important to discover exactly how we dissociated in order to survive. This should never be done alone but in the hands of caring people. Whether it be a trained professional, prayer partners who are experienced in dissociation or a loving and caring friend or family member, we need others to come alongside us in this process. This article describes my journey into dissociation as traumatic memories began to unfold. Please be sure you are in a safe place as you read. Triggers happen, so be safe in your journey.
