Travel Requirements: Entry to the British Virgin Islands

Passport Requirements American
Americans seeking to travel to the British Virgin Islands may do with a US passport. A passport is a requirement for all travelers flying to the British Virgin Islands. Cruise ship passengers are exempt from the passport regulation only if cruses depart and return from the United States. Entry Requirements for Europeans
A valid passport will suffice for most Europeans seeking to travel to the British Virgin Islands. However, residents of certain countries will be required to apply for a travel visa.

Entry Requirements for Caribbean Nationals
A similar requirement applies to Caribbean Nationals as citizens of some islands may not enter without a visa.

Immigration/Tourist Visits
Travelers access the British Virgin Islands via one of four ports of entry. These include:
• Great Harbor on Jost Van Dyke
• Road Harbor and West End Harbor on Tortola
• St Thomas Bay on Virgin Gorda.
Ports maintain business hours Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 4:30 and half day hours on Saturday from 8:30 to 12:30. Ports are closed on Sunday and on government holidays.

All non British Virgin Islanders may be granted visitation as tourists providing the following information is provided at the port of entry:
• return tickets are presented
• pre-arranged accommodations
• evidence of adequate means of financial support.

Sailboats/Vessels
Cruising permit fees are assessed per person on vessels entering the British Virgin Islands. Permit fees are small and are charged per person aboard vessels. Registered chartered vessels receive a discount as opposed to unregistered vessels. Rates vary with the tourist season as well.

Boat registration papers are required as well.

Extensions
Travelers who plan to stay more than a month may apply for an extension with the British Virgin Island immigration offices in Road Town, Tortola or Virgin Gorda.
