Trying to Get Started

I am in the mist of starting a record label. How did I get to this point? Well, I didn't grow up saying that I wanted to be a music producer. I thought that I would be a lawyer or even a nurse. Singing for money was never at the top of the list. I considered singing as merely a pasttime or a hobby. My mom would have me along with my siblings sing together at flea markets. That was for free!! I enjoy singing. Music is what makes me happy.
I decided to start a group upon entering into the seventh grade. That turned out to be a duet. We wrote our first song over the phone. We were made promises that were broken. Promises that we would be bigtime and would need tutors througout highschool.
I guess promises were meant to be broken.
To make a long story short, I have had my share of girl groups, backup singing, choral groups, and choirs. Now, I am going solo. However, I have ran into one tiny problem. Nobody seems to take me seriously. There are people that I have known for years who have the ability to produce music for me---well I have learned how to produce my own music---I just need an engineer---somone to PRESS THE BUTTONS. Anyways, these people are way to busy for me---even if I was a paying customer. I am starting to believe that the saying about familiarity breeding contempt is very true. I think it is just because it is me!!!
So, I am starting my own label. The first step, getting a tax id number. Next, get a business license for your area. Set up a bank account in the business name. Register with a publishing company such as BMI or ASCAP. Copyrighting all of my own material is a must. There are other steps to publishing other artists, however, for now, I am focusing on my own project. Please keep coming back as I add information. If you are starting a label and need help this might become useful for you. I will also leave links and other helpful material in the future.
