Trying to start a home daycare

Hey everyone,

I am trying to start a home daycare. I need some advice. What is it that parents look for in daycares? I know child safety and love, but what else? I have a few kids that I watch but I am trying to get more but am not sure about what parents look for. Any advice will help.

Also, does anyone know of any sites where I can find parents that are looking for babysitters or daycare OTHER then craigs list?

Thank You

Things to have

First what ages will you be having? Parents look for a clean. bright, colorful and cheerful enviroment. Meals have to be balanced and healthy. You will need someone who is able to fix meals or serve snacks that has a food handler's license. You will need someone to assist you and. In some states I believe it is two to every 10 children. Each child will need his/her own Cubby a place to put shoes, coats, hats, projects and blanket and pillows. Most take naps, most have snacks. You need to divide children into age groups if have a lot of kids. 0-15 months, 16 months -age 2, 3 and 4 year olds and 5-6 year olds. Will you have an after school program. If so You need to keep them seperate from younger kids. When do you open and when do you close. What plan do you have for late parents. How late is too late. You will need games and toys for each age group and attention span. Music, toys, puzzles, games, books, crayons, etc. Running a daycare takes a lot of planning and fore thought and making sure your up on codes, laws and regulations with the state your in. How much will you charge per child, per hour or day. What can you afford to pay your workers. What are the insurance laws for workers and for covering accidents on children. Is there a drop off place and pick up place for children? Is there a sign in and sign out book for parents. Do you have a fenced yard and safe playground equipment? I suggest you take some early child care classes if able this will help. Get books from the library to read and visit 2-3 daycares to get an idea what your in for and set up interviews with other daycare managers. Find out how to get a grant to help pay for things you might need. It is a big responsibility with a lot of risks and rewards.

Hello everyone, stop and set awhile.

I found a few great websites

I found a few great websites on Google about starting a day care business:

http://childcare.net/indexnew.shtml
http://www.dph.state.ct.us/BRS/Day_Care/day_care.htm
http://www.daycare.com/

Hope they help! =)

It's a shame you don't taste the world I taste. Everything's sugar laced.

I know you need to be

I know you need to be licensed. A friend of mine was thinking of doing this as well. I'll get in touch with him and see what information he found out and get back to you. =)

One piece of advice

Be careful there are many rules and regulations revoling around daycare. Least of which is a maximum number children you can care for. In Florida you have to have 3 yards per child of space. Fire marshals hav to certify you and Blah, blah blah.

Parents look for a clean. kid friendly enviroment. In my case we look for someone we know. So your best bet may be to advertise somehow with the children your children hangs out with. Professional.
