Turning your mind off to get a good night's sleep

It's impossible to fall asleep or go back to sleep when our mind is racing from one thought to another. There are things we can do before we go to bed that will help us wind down. Once we get into bed, the article suggests two things that, especially if used in combination, can take control of mental clutter. First, we have the power and ability to choose what to think about. Once we get in the habit, we can choose calm, peaceful, meditative thoughts instead of whatever our mind serves up on its own. Second, we can be mindful of our breathing, and in particular, slow it down. Therefore, we can choose to combine breathing with short, positive, and affirming phrases. These habits can calm us down when we need it any time day or night, but they are especially helpful for falling asleep.
