To Twitter or Not To Twitter

To Twitter or Not To Twitter

I recently heard about this new website. Ashton Kutcher uses it, an NBA player was doing this during halftime of a game, and even the local news says to send in information using this site. It is Twitter.

I am currently unemployed and looking for a marketing and communications position, so I should be up-to-date with the latest forms of communication. I even see job descriptions that look for online experience working with website design, blogging, and experience with LinkedIn, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and Twitter.

I was very experienced with website and blogging and familiar with all these sites, except Twitter, so I logged on and began to review it.

I get LinkedIn, a great site to keep your professional resume, keep up with professional contact and stay in touch. I get Facebook, a fun site to stay in touch with old friends, and communicate on a regular basis. I get MySpace, an opportunity to make new friends, create your own site and be you. I get YouTube, any video, need I say more.

Initially, I did not get Twitter. You create a short text of what you are doing at the current time.

I created an account, and posted my first Twitter. "I am on-line Twittering". I still do not get it.

Wait!!! You can Twitter from your phone. Okay, this is like texting. I still do not get it. I try to add my friends and family, and former co-worker. No one Twitters. I finally convince some friends and family to get a Twitter account when I realize... I still do not get it and now, they do not get it.

I do not get Twitter.

If I got Twitter, here is what my Twitter page would look like if I actually kept up with it.

07:00 - Got out of bed to text Twitter.
07:30 - Just got out of the shower. Hard to Twitter because the screen on the cell phone is fogged up.
08:00 - Finished breakfast. Had a bowl of Fruit Loops. They were especially good this morning. H-a-r-d to Twe-itteeer while brussshing teth.
08:10 - On my friend's, Joe, Twitter page. The idiot spelled out "ate breakfast" instead of "8 b-fast".
08:15 - I am checking out my Twitter page and just noticed I misspelled some words while brushing my teeth.

YOU GET MY PICTURE!!!!!

When did anyone really start caring about the stupid things we do in a day. If you have this much time on your hands than you really are not contributing anything to society, which surprises me that you have anything really post to Twitter anyway.

I still wanted to get Twitter, so I went back to their site and reviewed how Twitter describes itself.

What?
Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

Why?
Because even basic updates are meaningful to family members, friends, or colleagues—especially when they’re timely.

- Eating soup? Research shows that moms want to know.
- Running late to a meeting? Your co–workers might find that useful.
- Partying? Your friends may want to join you.

How?
With Twitter, you can stay hyper–connected to your friends and always know what they’re doing. Or, you can stop following them any time. You can even set quiet times on Twitter so you’re not interrupted.

Twitter puts you in control and becomes a modern antidote to information overload.

Let's put this very simply. When you combine the three groups, family, friends, co-workers, that is a bad, a very bad combination. Let's take the partying example Twitter uses. Great for you friends, bad for your mom to know, and even worse for the co-worked who is still at the office while you left early to go party.

Not everyone should know what you are doing. Even more, not everyone cares. This is one of the more useless things I have ever seen and is nothing but information overload. I expect only a few Twit-ters will be using this by the end of this decade.

The Humorous Side of Twitter

Oh my gosh! What a great article! - Humorous and Witty! I Love it! I do want to know however, how I missed the setting for quiet time. When I want quiet time, I just put the computer (and other electronics) and myself to sleep which is exactly what I going to do now. ;) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Earn for Your Writing on Xomba Earn for Your Writing on Bukisa Check Out My Writing on Bukisa

Twitter

"This is one of the more useless things I have ever seen and is nothing but information overload. I expect only a few Twit-ters will be using this by the end of this decade." Ha! Well, I'm sure similar things were said about MySpace, Facebook, Xomba, and even Google ("A search engine? How the heck can they make any money?")

Love that partying example

Love that partying example very funny.... I wonder about twitter myself sometimes only because it seems to be a spam machine i swear 99% of Tweets have a link It will be interesting to see how it evolves

AndAnotherTwit Getting Twitted

Xomba PTB and Hubpages are promoting Twitter and want us to Twitter (Tweet, Twit). Hubpages are set up for you to post a Tweet with the press of a button - for all your articles there. They want us to post links to our articles and their sites (methinks). I started yesterday and reckon I've seen increased click through rate - but it is early days. I've a couple of cunning plans to put into action and if they don't result in a damp squib I'll PM you. +1 admiring the pluck to admit you don't get it - that's an attitude we could do with more of in the whole wide world and in these parts. The penny will drop for me soon hopefully like a Jumbo in the Hudson (tee hee) JOIN XOMBA HERE FREE Xomba is an international online community and anyone can join.
