Understanding creative thinking: Thinking "outside the box"
posted June 15, 2009 - 11:45pmI have to admit that this topic is very interesting. In my point of view, "thinking inside the box" means "keeping your children at home most of the time and not allowing them to do anything which is against the rules. In other words "No!" is the frequent word used at home. On the other hand, "thinking out of the box" means a person who is able to to find a solution after facing some expected and unexpected difficulties and after mastering the art of patience".
If we were to understand the art of creative thinking, we must first build a strong foundation in us. What do we need? The first thing we need is positive thinking. Failing to think positively can be destructive to the development of the brain. What is the point of having billions of cells if it is blocked by fear? Let me give you an example. Let say our son who is 12 years old asking for our permission to visit his friend next door. If we simply say no, that answer will provocative and will develop rebellious character. Normally, when a child asks for reason, we tend to say, "My words are final!". Can this statement develop creative thinking in children?
The second thing we need is patience. Patience is positive thinking's best friend. Men are not born positively or negatively creative. How we shape the kid is crucial. If you have children, pay attention to their behaviour when they are 2 to 3 years old. They just want to do anything you do. This is the most precious time for you to develop their creative thinking. However, you must play by their rules as we are being too perfectionist especially in terms of spelling and pronunciation.
The third thing we need is the willingness to take the risk. For any parents who have been very succeeful in live must have understood this. What I mean is that they realized that without their parents's willingness to take the risk in the past, they would not have been so successful today. Taking risk in raising a child can be explained in many ways. Let say we have a very smart kid. He is so smart that we begin to over pamper him. We start to ignore all the bad things he do. The worst thing starts to happen as we assume that he has a bright future just because that he is smart. Gradually, this kid begins to develop the hardest head on earth or in other words he has become a person who will never accept anyone's comments and especially rejections. As they grow up, they will start to become trouble-makers. The main point here is that, if we didn't take the risk to punish them and also reward them when they were little kids, they will be an annoying burden not only to the family but society. The second stituation is, there are parents who are afraid of giving their kids a pencil, fork, spoon and etc because they are afraid that these items can be harmful to the children. Should we give them pencil or pen five to six years later? That will be quite late to develop creative thinking.
Before we lead the children out of the box, make sure that we are also not trapped in the box of fear. Thank you for reading.
