Understanding Success
posted June 21, 2008 - 9:42amSuccess isn't always easy to understand. We all want to be successful, but the definition of success is often rather elusive to us. It is easy to work hard and feel that we are either successful or unsuccessful, but it is the measurements that we are using to define the moment as one way or another.
Those with lots of money are often seen as successful. It doesn't matter if they enjoy what they do, are good people, love their families, or are moving in a positive direction. People see the money as the success. It could come from self made business, for a good career such as lawyer or doctor, or it could be that he was in the right place at the right time with his investments. But is money really a good measure of success?
The person who has a lot of money from illegal ventures isn't as often seen as a success, however there will still be some who see him as a great success. But the question still comes back to are we measure success in a beneficial way?
Maybe success needs to be measured in love. We could put a points system on it and see if you are successful in the relationships that you have. We have a lot of people in our lives and the relationships we have are important. Measuring success in this way would increase the number of poor and middle class people who would be defined as successful.
Maybe success is loving what you do. It doesn't matter how much money as long as you love what you do. This is a good starving artist viewpoint of success. I struggle to pay the bills and get food on the table, but I love the art that I make. In this view point, the number of successful people is probably going to fall dramatically since most people are just not happy with what they do.
Maybe the problem is that we become consumed by our jobs. This becomes what we define things in our life as. While we need money to live, it is also just a part of our lives instead of the whole pie of life. There are relationships, hobbies, and the things that we do outside of work that can all lend a hand to making us a success.
Of course, figuring out if you are a success or if you are successful is really in the eye of the beholder, you can make the choice of whether you are or your aren't successful. If one feels successful will they share that with the world through their personality, their countenance, their behavior, and their opinions? Can one become successful simply by changing their mindset, their thinking, and their attitude? After all, the sun is shining in my world, the glass is half full, and life is indeed good.
