United Airlines stocks crash on rumour: Full story

United Airlines today said reports that the company filed for bankruptcy are completely untrue and were caused by the irresponsible posting of a 6-year-old Chicago Tribune article by the Florida Sun Sentinel newspaper website with the date changed.

The story was related to United's 2002 bankruptcy filing, and United has demanded a retraction from the Sun Sentinel and is launching an investigation. United exited bankruptcy in February 2006.

Itchy keyboard fingers

There must be some overcaffeinated newsroom folks hitting the "Submit" key. A couple of weeks back a news staffer accidentally put the obituary of Steve Jobs online, and now this. I'm sure one day I'll go to the New York Times Web site and see a huge headline, "Dewey defeats Truman!"

hmmm, i didn't know that.

I'd check the stock market transactions, too

One of the lesser-known stories from 9/11 was the shorting of United Airlines and American Airlines stock in the days leading up to the attacks. While nobody claimed the millions in profit from the transactions, the source of the shorts was traced to a high-level executive in the CIA. Strangely, the 9/11 Commission didn't see fit to pursue this angle further. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

i agree.

Yeah - But It Is Just A Matter Of Time...

With the way the airlines have been treating their paying customers lately, it is probably just a matter of time before the story can be legitimately "recycled".
