USF Football is For Real: Bulls Upset No 5 W. Va.

The rich tradition of college football in the state of Flordia has gotten noticably richer in this young season.

The University of South Florida has been making noise in its first few games, and Friday night the Bulls roared with a 21-13 upset of Number 5 University of West Virginia. < p>

Playing at home in Tampa, the Number 18 USF Bulls defeated the Mountaineers for the second time in a year, having beaten West Virginia in Morgantown last season.

USF quarterback Matt Grothe threw a a 55-yard touchdown pass to Carlton Mitchell after scrambling to avoid a sack. Ben Moffitt returned two interceptions, one of them 26 yards for a touchdown.

The USF football team set a number of high marks recently: the West Virginia game was a record crowd for a USF home game (67,018), and two weeks ago the Bulls achieved a Top 25 ranking for the first time ever.

To top it off, the USF football program has existed for only 11 seasons.

For many years Tampa had been trying to attract professional sports teams. The ironic thing is that now that it has pro teams, the most exciting athletic show in town is coming from the local university!
