Using Steve Irwin's Death to Boost Fading Career

I have to say, I really admire Germaine Greer. What a canny thinker, and so quick on her feet! While the rest of the world (with a few notable exceptions) mourned the loss of International celebrity Steve Irwin, Greer saw the opportunity to get her name out there, and immediately blasted the deceased Irwin as “getting what he deserved”.

Germaine Greer is someone I had never heard of, but as soon as she launched her attack on Steve Irwin, I immediately googled her and found the following information on Wikipedia

“Germaine Greer is an expatriate Australian academic, writer, and broadcaster, who is widely regarded as one of the most significant feminist voices of the 20th century.” (Here is the entire entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germaine_Greer)

It was after I read about her that I truly had to admire the brilliance of this lady. She saw an opening introduce herself to more people, and pounced on it. I mean, I now know who she is, and until Irwin died, would never have even thought twice about her. You have to wonder…did she have a list of Australian celebrities who she was going to criticize in the event of their death? If it had been, say, one of The Wiggles would her statements have been “They damaged more children than they entertained”? Or Nicole Kidman – “she never should have divorced Tom Cruise”.

Or, maybe she is an amazingly quick thinker. As soon as it became apparent that there would be a huge public outpouring in the wake of Irwin’s death, she thought that the quickest way to jump on that publicity train would be to come out with a statement so sharply opposite of what the rest of the world was saying that her name couldn’t help but be posted in the same headlines as Irwin’s.

Whatever her plan, it proved successful. The Australian Prime Minister talked about her. Her name is everywhere. No matter that the publicity is negative, people who didn’t have a clue who she was now do. I also am a victim of her clever publicity scheme. I googled her, learned about her on Wikipedia, and now I am writing about her. Wow, the woman is a genius!

She is also a sad, pathetic, cold-hearted, publicity hound. A man, who was obviously beloved by millions, died an unexpectedly tragic death, and the world is in mourning. Not only the world, but, more importanly, his family. Above everything else, Steve Irwin was a family man – it was obvious to anyone who had ever seem him on TV. Fan or not, the man was beloved, and, as when anyone dies, a certain amount of decorum is called for, simply out of respect for his memory, and for his family. For Greer to chose this time to share her opinions of Steve Irwin shows not only an utter lack of class, but a lack of heart as well.

I wonder how Greer will use her newfound notoriety? Will she parlay it into a new book deal? Will she downplay it as something she said in a time of grief, and maybe even eventually apologize for her thoughtlessness (perhaps on a book tour?). If she is the savvy publicity genius I think her to be, this is exactly what will happen. Her career will find new life, all based on well thought out, cutting remarks about a person who, a nation, and a world holds dear.

Here’s what I hope will happen. She will continue to denigrate Irwin, talking to anybody who will listen. Soon, people will tire of her spouting the same tired lines, and she will fade back into the relative obscurity from whence she came.

R.I.P. Steve Irwin
You will be missed.

Good job

Well, you're basically doing the same thing, but more covertly. It's kind of like a three-layer cake and as the reader you can choose to view the piece in different ways. I'm cynical so I'll view it in a sneaky way. But I liked it a lot.

I think calling her a

I think calling her a publicity genius is more than a little ridiculous. Every idiot can complain, and anybody paying attention can see that 'shock' tactics will get you publicity - the more outrageous the better. Even if it is nothing new. She was simply paying attention. Noticing something doesn't make her a genius. Genius connotates something extraordinary, while what she is doing is simply the norm.

Here's the link to the article

that Greer wrote. I'm not sure where marin found the comment that says Irwin "deserved" to die, but it's not in this article. link

Yeah I don't care about a

Yeah I don't care about a nay-sayer at all. I don't think Steve Irwin got what he deserved because he was a wonderful human being who loved his family and it was tragic that he died. However, in light of how he died, and how rare and nearly impossible it was for him to be killed in this manner, I realized that it was certainly his time to go. For something to quick, painless, and clearly freakish to be his demise was a blessing if in the future he would have been mangled by a crocodile, killed over a period of 24 hours by a horribly poisonous spider, or seen one of his children accidentally killed by an animal. If all these painful proceedings could have been prevented by his untimely death, and I like to think that is the case, then it was better for him that it happened this way. This was the only explanation I could come up with for something so strange happening to such a good person.

I have no idea who this

I have no idea who this women, and I won't even bother to search for her cause then she will be in the list of: "The most search people in the internet." I won't help on her publicity scheme.

When it's all said and done

You can argue that Steve Irwin's tactics with animals is questionable. However, you can't argue that he truly loved animals. Positive or negative he placed the issue of environmentalism in front of the public and forced them to swallow it. No matter what your stance is with global warming, animal rights or the saving of the rainforest one of the main reasons people debate these topics today is because of Steve Irwin and Animal Planet. Whether you love him or hate him he accomplished his goal and you have to admire that. The public debating an issue can never be conceived as a negative act.

I loved Steve Irwin

and I know nothing of the woman about whom you speak... not even the negative comments regarding the deceased... I won't even bother to google this least common denominator! But... when I went to tell my kids Steve Irwin had died, they said, "what did he get killed by?" Even a 10 and 12 year old new that his death would not be by natural, or at least internal. ~write your plans in pencil and give God the eraser
