I am living on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands and there are so many fun and intersting things to do here, but you would never know it if you didn't live here. So my main tip is to find out the best things to do from the locals. From everything to water sports, to hiking, to beaches, restaurants and attractions, you have to find out from the locals what the best way to go is. Only they know how to make the most of your vacation. It is also a great idea to take a tour and ask the tour guides what the best things to do are. It is definately worth your while to hire a tour guide to show you around. They can show you things you would never ever find on your own. If you want to visit St. Croix, I suggest Tan Tan Tours. They will take you everywhere in their jeeps. Another great tip is to be safe. Don't carry a bunch of cash, don't walk around at night into dark alley ways looking like a tourist. That just makes you an easy target. If your going out a night, stick to well lit main roads to walk on where there are other people around. Don't venture out by yourself, ever. Travel in groups.
