Van Allsburg's HARRIS BURDICK Comes to Musical Life
Barrington Stage Company in the Berkshires is presenting through July 5 a new musical adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s popular children’s book, THE MYSTERIES OF HARRIS BURDICK.
What’s especially unusual about this is that there is no story to the book HARRIS BURDICK. It is a series of unrelated pictures, which the creator intends to be used to spur the imagination of the reader and inspire him/her to create his/her own story for each picture.
The creators of the musical, (Book by Joe Calarco, Lyrics by Nathan Tysen, Music by Chris Miller) have created a story that links all of the pictures in the book. According to press notes, the musical tells the story of a writer who left a series of astonishing sketches at a publisher’s office. Instead of returning as promised with the accompanying stories, he vanishes. The show offers one explanation for the man’s disappearance, taking the audience on a wild ride through wonder, fear, and the imagination.
