Verizon Wireless plans to open network to all compatible phones
posted November 28, 2007 - 1:04pmVerizon Wireless announced Tuesday that they are planning to open their network to all makes and models of compatible cell phones. This marks a complete reversal of standard Verizon policy restricting use of their network to phones selected by the company.
This decision will allow owners to choose the phones and devices they prefer and also allow owners to run any applications they desire. It's unclear at this point how much Verizon Wireless will charge customers for the privilege. These changes are expected to be implemented by the end of 2008.
The hope is that other carriers such as AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile will soon follow suit to allow an open network for all wireless carriers.
So what does this mean for you?
If you're in love with an IPhone but currently have Verizon as your carrier, you might be able to finally get the phone of your dreams. Love the Sidekick but don't want the sometimes spotty T-mobile service in your area? You'll soon have consumer choices that you didn't have before.
