Video game review: Chrono Trigger
posted July 1, 2007 - 2:09pmChrono Trigger is perhaps one of the greatest role playing games(RPG) ever to be made. The game deals with time travel, and it's effects on the world. You play Crono in this game, and you travel the world in the past, present, and future. Friends are made, battles are won, and time marches on.
One of the things that made this game so great is the fact that there are multiple endings to it. You can see what happens if evil reigns supreme, or what happens if Crono dies. And then there is the happy ending where everything works out for the best(my favorite).
The storyline for this game is excellent. Very few games seem to have decent story lines, in my opinion. But Chrono Trigger really delivers a great one. It all begins with Crono sleeping in his bed. His mom comes upstairs, and tells him to wake up because it's time to go to the Millennial Fair.
Crono's trip to the Millennial Fair turns out to be much more then he expected. He runs into a new friend named Marle, who just happens to be the princess of the land(she doesn't tell him this, though). They both decide to explore the festival grounds together.
Unfortunately, Marle is accidentally sucked through a time vortex later on when Crono meets up with his other friend Lucca. She's a scientist, who builds all sorts of interesting gadgets. Sometimes these interesting gadgets are quite dangerous, as Marle finds out the hard way.
When the princess falls into the time portal, Crono goes after her. This is where it all begins. Crono is taken back to a time when war is upon the land. Not only does Crono need to save Marle, but he also needs to help out his homeland. After all this is done, Marle and Crono learn about darker forces that are set upon destroying the world.
Thus begins the epic quest to save the world. Crono and his friends must journey back and forth in time, and fight the evil that is attempting to destroy the land. At times they are in the Stone Age, and at other times they go back to when magic ruled the world. It's all very interesting, and it makes you wonder what our own world may have been like a million years ago or so.
The source of this great evil that I keep referring to is named Lavos. Lavos is an evil being that tries time and again to destroy Crono and his friends. He ultimately fails. However, since the game has multiple endings you can see what would happen if Crono were to lose. Then you just hit the restart button on the game console, and make sure that Lavos loses.
With time, the darkness is defeated and all is made right in the world. Crono and his friends save the land from evil, and live out their lives to the fullest(depending on the ending).
