The Carolinas are known for their attractive beaches that often entertain families during summer vacation. However, if you are not looking for a beach vacation and would still like to visit North Carolina, then Asheville is a popular summer destination. The rolling hillsides and mountainous climate offer a change from the typical beach vacation.
Option One: The Great Outdoors
Asheville, North Carolina has many recreational opportunities for those who love the outdoors. There are plenty of trails, parks, and hiking options that will entertain kids and adults alike. The mountainous terrain offers warm summer days and cooler summer nights, so camping is a great option. In addition, if you are more daring and adventurous, there are several white water rafting adventures available for purchase. The French Broad River has some level three and four rapids, so they are quite manageable for older children, teens, and adults. These white water rafting tours offer packages that range from all day adventures to trips that only last for a couple of hours. The rafting packages are hosted by tour guides, so you will have appropriate supervision and guidance on your adventure.
Option Two: The Biltmore Estate
The Biltmore estate, which is situated on the southern portion of Asheville, offers tours that provide a historical look at the community. The Vanderbilt family hosts tours of the Biltmore estate, surrounding gardens, and private acreage. There are several high quality restaurants on the premises, so you can enjoy a gourmet meal while you are there. If you enjoy outdoor activities, there are Segway tours that allow you to discover the Vanderbilt estate from your own motorized vehicle. Even though the Biltmore estate is a popular tourist destination, the audio guided tours give you the option to explore at your own pace. You don’t have to wait in crowded, long lines.
Option Three:
If your budget can accommodate a hot air balloon ride while you are in Asheville, North Carolina, then take advantage of this once in a lifetime activity. The beautiful scenery surrounding Asheville and the peaceful environment can best be experienced while you are touring the area from a mile high in the sky. This tourist attraction is not for the faint of heart, or for those who have a fear of heights, but it is worth the investment if you want an activity that is a bit daring.
