Historic charmer Savannah, Georgia is home to charming television chef Paula Deen. Fans flock to the “Cooking with Paula Deen” show to for her delectable cuisine delivered with down home charm. Find out how to see Paula in person or at least sample some of her recipes. Take a trip to Savannah, Georgia where Deen’s culinary career got its start and dine at her restaurant The Lady and Son.

Paula Deen began her amazing career as a one woman lunch delivery service with her son’s helping to deliver food to area businesses. News of her delicious cooking spread, the business grew and Deen was able to open a restaurant, The Lady in the Best Western Hotel on Savannah’s southside. As her reputation grew, Deen opened a new, more stylish restaurant in the heart of downtown Savannah. In 1996, The Lady and Sons welcomed its first customers and rave reviews soon followed. In just three years The Lady and Sons was featured in USA Today and the praise continued. In 2001, Deen began a show on the Food Network. In 2003, The Lady and Sons moved to a larger building on the same street and grew from 85 seats to 330 seats with a full service bar.

Visitors to The Lady and Sons may want to sample the Fried Green Tomatoes appetizer, a southern favorite, or skip right to the main courses. The shrimp and grits entrée pays homage to Lowcountry cuisine, the Lowcountry refers to the coastal areas of South Carolina and Georgia with Charleston and Savannah being to two main cities. The Savannah crab cakes feature another nod to local foods including the area’s seafood and served with collard greens, a staple of southern kitchens. Save room for the pecan pie for dessert.

Need souvenirs? Next to the restaurant The Paula Deen Store is open and filled with cookbooks, calendars, special sauces and a number of things Deen.

Walk off the meal and take in the sights of Savannah. The city, planned on squares, features lovely gardens and historic architecture. Founded in 1733, the city features fantastic architecture and many historic sites. Historic forts, cemeteries and opulent homes will please any history buff. The historic downtown area of Savannah is one of the largest districts in the US National Historic Landmark system.
