Vocabulary Lesson: Disinherited, as in "Paris Hilton was not"
posted December 31, 2007 - 12:19amLet me start by saying that many people writing articles about Paris Hilton being "disinherited" should have asked for a "Word a Day" dictionary calendar for Christmas. There are far too many people bandying about words, like disinherited, when retelling the story of the Hilton patriarch's will change.
Disinherit, as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary, means "to exclude from inheritance". In other words, to be "cut out of the will". Since Paris Hilton is going to be receiving $5,000,000, she is going to receive an inheritance. Ergo, by definition she was not disinherited.
While I support the actions of the Hilton family in this case, as there are many charities more worthy of their benevolence than Paris' attorney or the Los Angeles County penal system, I hope Paris learns her lesson and turns her life around before she is permanently designated "damaged goods".
I urge Ms. Hilton to rent Maid to Order and take the story to heart.
