Votes...But No Comments?

Votes...But No Comments?

There are people, very few mind you, who believe that their opinion is right and everybody else is misguided. There is no room for discussion on matters where opinions vary.

In a forum like this, where there is the option to remain anonymous, those who prefer taking the easy way out are definitely in their element.

I read an article a few days ago that was based on religion. I thought that article was well written and would have thought so, even if I didn’t agree with the content. However, I noted that someone – who naturally didn’t leave a name – had given a vote of 2.

A day or so after that, I read another blog, whose owner ranted about the fact that he was being given low ratings, on his postings, by someone who did not have the courage to vote and leave a comment.

My view is this. Writers appreciate knowing what works and what doesn't work for their readers. Our ego is fragile, however, I prefer knowing what specific faults the reader found and any comments as to how the material can be improved. That helps me. What doesn’t help is a low score and no comment.

If and when I come to read material that is poorly written, I’d rather not vote than vote and not leave a comment.

If the site is geared at us helping each other improve our writing, I’d think sharing what we liked, agreed with, disagreed with or thought could be better expressed would be standard procedure. Don’t you?

People Aren't 'Natural Subscribers'

Maybe 'Natural Subscribers' is the wrong phrase, but I don't know what else to call 'curious readers who are attracted enough (to your content) to regularly read what you write and carefully consider what you have to say.' Even I--putting 'Xomba-reader' in my "nameplate"--don't always care enough (about what's in an article I read) to do more than 'vote' for the article (sometimes just 'to show the writer I was here'). All adsense requires is the

All adsense requires is the ability to cut and paste...I don't know where people get the HTML thing from.

I hope that as time goes by,

we all take a little time to let each other know what we think about our writing and how we can improve this community. Thanks for coming by and sharing your thoughts.

My Sentiments exactly

I just posted a Xombyte titled discouraged along these same lines and I am not sure I will be staying. Still have not got adsense to work for me. Don't understand the computer lingo, or html or how all that works. But even if I didn't use adsense. I thought this would be an informative, fun and encouraging site. But finding the same few people reading, voting and commenting. The rest are rude and won't let anyone know what they think of someone's Xombyte, They leave low rate votes 1 or 2 and most seem not to like religious Xombytes or political ones that don't agree with them. Maybe I will stay and maybe not. I will give it a few more weeks and see what flys.

Hello everyone, stop and set awhile.

I vote and comment, but not always!

I comment! I'liked your posting. I'm not as thin-skinned as I was when young. I know encouragement can make all the difference in a person's life, to what they do, or become. I will vote on even less than perfectly phrased or constructed items simply to encourage the development of more and better output.

I agree with you completely

I agree with you completely and Xomba Admin, I think you're missing a crucial point. One of the best ways to get your work read by a wider audience is to have it up there on the Top Rated Xombytes list and a score of 6 with 50 responses isn't going to do that! I never had a problem with low voting until after I offered contrasting opinions, not on my own xombytes, but on other people's. There are a few juvenile writers out there who's names I won't mention that simply do not have the capacity for debate and instead just vote down the xombytes of those they do not like. I can't think of a way to truly fix this problem, but putting the voting option on the Comment form rather than on the xombyte itself would be a big start.

Sebastian

I have to agree with that. Most of the people I've read write articles that are of interest on interesting and varied topics.

Personally, I think that

Personally, I think that this site blows "myspace" out of the water. Most of the writings I have seen on here so far are amazing, and a BRAVO! goes to you authors that keep up with your postings and sites. I have found that there is something to learn in everything. Sebastian.

I believe whole heartdly

I believe this is true. I always try to say something. I always like to hear something. Being in my business you learn very early not to get your feelings hurt. Just do the best you can and correct past mistakes

To vote or not vote....

Patrick,

Glad you like the site we're working hard to keep improving it. :)
We're always open to suggestions. Just make sure we know about it.

Take care and have fun.
