voting rights
posted May 31, 2009 - 1:31pmIn the beginning of our country’s life, the right to vote was reserved for the land owning white men citizens. That boiled down to the middle and upper class, Caucasian males. The first voting right was the 19th amendment which is women’s right to vote. The 19th amendment was passed on August 26, 1920. After then, it was only the minorities (blacks) who could not vote. When the blacks realized what’s going on, they also wanted to vote so they could have a say in what our government will be and how things will be run. So in 1965, the National Voting Rights Act was passed. This act made discriminatory practices at the polls illegal. So now men, women, blacks, whites, and everyone can vote if they are so inclined, but this also leads to another problem. The problem is that at this time in history, America is sending any able body between the ages of 18-30 to Vietnam. Well that makes those 18,19,and 20 year old kids go to get themselves killed without even having the ability to voice their own opinion on the matter. So that is when the 26th amendment comes into play. The 26th amendment lowers the voting age to 18 years old. The 26th amendment was passed in 1971. So if those 18, 19, and 20 year old kids were not killed over in “Nam”, which many were, they were able to come home and vote democrat so they won’t be shipped off again (boo). And those are the three acts that changed American voters into what they are today.
