Night duty, Our schedule was 11pm -7am. I was told by so many people that nursing was the course of no sleep. Apparently for me I love sleeping. I in fact could sleep the whole day and wake up the next day and cant wait to fall asleep again. That’s how much I love sleeping. Unfortunately for me, I was placed in a schedule that contradicted my little hobby. Dumangas was out of town and we were required to sleep here for 2 days and go on duty for 3 nights. This experience happened one night, when I was told to assist the doctor in handling a delivery. It was my first time to handle a delivery hands on, coincidently, I was half awake at that time. 2 30 am the door to the room I fell asleep in burst open, and I was called to the delivery room with 5 other classmates of mine.
Entering the delivery room, I looked around and notice that the doctor was already there, she was already between the pregnant woman’s legs ready to assist her to give birth. I slowly made my way towards her, put on a pair of gloves. The woman seemed to have a hard time, I noticed her grimacing and grunting. The doctor left me to get something, important probably. I came closer. I was still in a daze however and I was trying to make observations. When suddenly water burst out the woman’s opening. I impulsively jumped back but the water from her water bag caught my whole left leg. I swear I was ready to go naked, but I dint.
After that moment everyone speeded up, they went to their places and I did what I was told, when suddenly the doctor took my hands pulled me near the mothers opening and said I had to pull out the baby, as if the water bag wasn’t enough, I was thrown into another situation, a very new…and hard situation. I hesitated at first and I found myself standing, lost for a second. I did not know how to pull a baby out. The doctor must have noticed, and patiently took my hands and guided me holding the baby’s head, the loud cry of the new born told me it was a job well done, I sighed deeply in relief. It was time to clamp the baby’s cord. This part did not go so well as to what I have hoped for. In Fact I thought I had closed my eyes while holding the clamp in one hand and the scissor in the other, I was tremendously sleepy and I kept waking up every time a high pitched voice rang. People where talking about my little finger and the doctor was telling me to cut the cord. This confused me but my instructor guided me all the way. I tied the knot around the cord “perfectly”. That made me proud. Then it was time to pull the placenta out. It slid out okay and it was a job well done for me.
