Peace on earth, good will to men(sic)

That's what I love about this time of year: God-fearing shoppers embued with the Christmas spirit willing to kill for a cheap DVD player!

come on! hand on heart! it IS funny!!

when people are losing their homes, losing their jobs, losing their stock options, others go shopping for a toaster and get frazzled... it IS funny.

My sympathy gene has short-circuited.

Damn, I hate how people can't hear your tone whilst reading your words.

Or maybe sarcasim/cynicism evolves over the years but, either way, I was agreeing with ye, Mr Manne :D

A preventable tragedy

I blame the bovine herd that crushed the man as much as I blame the cutthroat corporate mentality that says "let's get the people in the store by promising brand new laptops for $200, but we'll only put ten in each store". This is not the first time the bovine stampede caused mayhem in a WalMart store. Three years ago in Seattle, the herd knocked down the in-store display barrier in the electronics section in a failed attempt to cut the line that was making for the laptops and other electronic goodies.

If you contrast that corporate screw-the-people-but-take-their-money-anyway mentality of WalMart with arguably the largest electronics retailer, Best Buy, you will see a different approach. Realizing that there will be lots of people waiting for hours to get the Black Friday doorbuster merchandise, they will come out 15-30 minutes before the store opens with tickets and ask the first people in line what they want to buy, writing the tickets as they go. When the doors open, the buyers only have to go to will-call to pick up the stuff without falling over each other to race to the displays first.

My wife and I did Black Friday one time and now we either go later in the day or we just do the shopping online. There are just too many chances for our health and safety that are taken once we place our lives in the hands of the other people who would "just die" if they couldn't get a cheap dvd player or Xbox game after waiting in line for a few hours.

cows behave better

I wouldn't call the greedy, mindless crowd that stampeded at Walmart "bovine"--that's an insult to cows! Otherwise what you said makes sense.

Wal-Mart Death

I agree--calling the Wal-Mart crowds bovine is an insult to cows! What a greedy heartless crowd of shoppers. I don't do Black Friday, I can't imagine braving those kinds of crowds and putting my health and safety at risk, even for deals at stores.

Wal-Mart Death: a Preventable Tragedy

I totally agree with jdubhub, the death at Wal-Mart was preventable and stemmed from greed on the part of the company and the shoppers. I find it chilling that as the man died at Wal-Mart, people kept on shopping! This is like a story I heard about an old man who lay dying in the street for a long time as cars and passersby kept right on moving past him. Also, a story I heard about a woman who keeled over and died in an emergency room after waiting something like 12 hours for treatment, and she was just ignored, no one seemed to notice she was ill and dying. All of these stories show a basic disregard for human life.

I live in a very small rural town and one of the only places to shop is Wal-Mart, prices are also better there for this small town area than other stores. But whenever I'm there, I notice this pushing and shoving mentality in the store I don't find as much elsewhere. People will just push you out of the way, or hit you with carts, and are really inconsiderate sometimes, while shopping, especially during holidays.

This Wal-Mart story really affected me and I'm still trying to make sense of it. Thanks for all your comments on this Xomblurb!
